Industrial Diseases: Repetitive Strain Injury

If you work in a dangerous chemical plant, deep in a coal mine, or even in an office cubicle you are probably at risk for a repetitive strain injury. Industrial diseases were more common in the day when the federal government had not passed many laws making employers accountable for the safety of their workers, but they still occur today.

Some examples of industrial diseases range from asthma to mesothelioma. However, one of the most common industrial diseases today is repetitive strain injuries.

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

RSI symptom's affect all parts of the body, causing pain, lessened endurance, as well as sore muscles and joints. These symptoms are brought on by repetitive motion for a short or long period of time in the workplace. Some of the most common RSIs are carpal tunnel syndrome, Ulnar nerve entrapment, "tennis elbow," and stenosing tenosynovitis/trigger finger/thumb.

Our arms and hands are especially at risk for a repetitive strain, as most jobs require extensive use of these limbs. Being on the phone all day, eight hours of typing a day, or working on an assembly line can all put us in danger of this common industrial disease.

Treatment

There are treatments for most RSIs, most include long periods of rest from the job, allowing the body to heal. However, there are other physical therapy options that can help to not only repair the damage, but to also strengthen and prevent other RSIs from developing.
