The Hazards of Crocs

Over the past couple of years, Crocs and the shoes that mimic them have become a summer staple for children and adults alike. The shoes are comfortable and come in a wide variety of colors, assuring their appeal. For children in particular, the fact that they cannot be ruined by water and dirt is helpful and makes them an excellent footwear choice.

While Crocs have many advantages, they have one huge disadvantage. Over the past couple of summers, a number of children have found themselves injured while wearing Crocs and riding escalators. Crocs are made of a special type of plastic. Because they are made of plastic, it is possible for them to become too hot and reform in a different shape.

When children ride on escalators, they have a tendency to stand too close to the side of the escalator. If the escalator is a long one, their Crocs can rub against the side of the escalator. This friction creates heat. If the escalator travels a long distance, the heat can accumulate to the point that it melts or softens the Crocs.

Once the Crocs have been softened, they can be pulled into the under mechanisms of the escalator. When they are pulled under, they have been known to pull the child’s foot with them, causing the foot to be injured or mauled by the mechanism of the escalators.

One such case occurred when a family was taking a summer trip to Disney World. Unfortunately for the child, his trip did not get off to a good start when his foot was mauled by an escalator in the airport before they even left their home state.
