Cell Phone Radiation Safety

Cell phones enable families and friends to remain in touch, all the time, anywhere in the world. Communication is possible with the press of a button, making our increasingly mobile lives more connected with loved ones. Unfortunately, however, the modern attachment to the cellular telephone is not without potential health hazards.

Since the introduction of cell phones, concerns about health consequences from regular usage have been raised. Most studies, including those from the Institution of Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, and Danish Institute of Cancer Epidemiology, have not found any significant negative health effects from cell phone usage. However, a study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer found a borderline statistically significant link between tumors on the side of the head where cell phone usage takes place. Heavy cellular phone usage has also been connected with less fertile sperm counts in men.

The Federal Food and Drug Administration has urged the cell phone industry to support research into possible effects of radiofrequency (RF) energy as emitted by phones, design phones that minimize RF exposure, and help to educate customers as much as possible about any potential effects. The invention of hands-free cell phone usage has helped users lessen their exposure to the thermal and radiation effects of cell phones. Additional recommended steps include keeping the mobile phone away from the body and not using the telephone in a car without an external antenna.
