Possible Tire Defects
All of the tire companies emphasize that they are safe and take into consideration the safety of the people in the vehicle that rides on their tires. Unfortunately, many tires still have problems. Sometimes, this is a design or manufacturing flaw.
Since the Firestone recall of 2000, there has been a lot more attention paid to tire defects and their consequences. Some of these possible problems include tire explosions, blow outs, losing tread, and breaking away from the rim. The most serious problem is a belt-leaving-belt defect.
This type of defect occurs when belts in normal radial tires completely separate from the tread of the tire. This causes a complete collapse of the tire’s structure and body. This defect results in the tire leaving the rim altogether. The belt-leaving-belt defect frequently occurs at high speeds which makes the defect even more dangerous.
When a belt-leaving-belt defect occurs, the driver’s ability to control the vehicle is diminished. This is especially true when a rear tire experiences this problem. The problems are exacerbated the faster a vehicle is going when the belt leaves the tread.
Because a driver loses control of the car, crashes are more likely. Injuries or fatalities from this problem are far more common when the tread separation occurs on an SUV than when the same problem occurs on a pickup truck.
