Defective Football Helmets
Being on the receiving end of a tackle will never feel good no matter what a football player is wearing. This is the nature of the sport, it is supposed to hurt. The purpose of helmets is not to numb the pain, but to prevent serious injuries. That is why they are a requirement for all players of the American past time whether at the youth, high school, collegiate, or professional level. If a football helmet is defective however, it can actually put an athlete at greater risk for injuries like concussions.
Inspection
Whether new or used, helmets must be tested for safety performance before being used by players. This is particularly important in the reconditioning industry where companies repair and reinforce old and used helmets. Reconditioning companies are required to run impact tests on at least 2% of their stock.
NOCSAE Test Protocol
The National Operating Committee for Standards on Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) requires that reconditioning companies perform a formal drop-testing procedure on their helmets. The procedure involves testing helmets by subjecting them to strong forces in different locations. Products that crack, break, or otherwise fail this test leave athletes susceptible to skull fractures and brain hemorrhaging. It is required that defective helmets be destroyed.
