The Dangers of Prescription Drugs

The dangers inherent in so called “supplement” drugs are well-known by many consumers. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA and are therefore drugs that should be taken with caution. But few people are wary of prescription drugs prescribed to them buy their trusted doctors.

While it is normal to want to completely trust your pharmacist and physician, even these professionals are not always aware of the many possible side effects that can result from prescription drug use. Most prescription drugs are created in laboratories by scientists who are paid by pharmaceutical companies to develop them. The drugs are then taken through a series of controlled tests also conducted by the pharmaceutical company that wishes to patent and market the drug. Once the studies are finished, the findings are sent to the FDA for approval.

While the initial side-effects discovered during the study will be listed on a print out from the pharmacy, long term side-effects are not usually available. If side-effects are later found to be too severe, the drug will be taken off the market. The following are possible severe side effects that can result from various prescription drugs:

  • Heart attack
  • Birth defects
  • Stroke
  • Tremors
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Cancer
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Severe depression
