Robot to Reduce Pharmacy Error

Posted on Friday, May 23rd, 2008 at 6:05 am

United States hospitals are now using robots to reduce potentially life-threatening pharmacy errors.  PillPick, a two-armed robot that places a single dose of medication in a small bag with an identifying bar code, is now being used in Chicago hospitals.  A nurse can scan the coded bag along with a bar code on the patient’s wristband.  If the medication or dosage is incorrect, a computer will alert the nurse to the error.

The robot was designed by SwissLog Healthcare Solutions.  PillPick costs about $1.5 million apiece.  The robot is designed to reduce human error.  Common sources of mistakes include mixing up drugs with similar spellings and placing the wrong dosages in the same location.

Pharmacy error can result in lethal consequences.  If you have experienced negative health complications due to pharmacy error, contact the experienced Rhinelander Personal Injury Lawyers at Habush Habush & Rottier S.C. ® today at 800.369.5990 to learn more about your legal options.

Oregon Medical Malpractice Limit Maintained

Posted on Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 at 4:05 am

The Oregon Supreme Court recently ruled to uphold a five-year statute of limitations involving minors.  After a recent claim that purported laws from Oregon’s territory existence blocked the current time limitation, the court ruled to maintain the state law.  The claim was brought forth by a woman who sued Providence Health Center eight years after the birth of her son for failing to perform an emergency Caesarean section when signs of fetal distress were displayed.  The woman’s son suffered several developmental disabilities due to a lack of oxygen during birth.

The court ruled unanimously against the woman’s case, declaring although the statute can lead to “harsh consequences,” there is nothing in the state constitution to stop the legislature from setting that limit.

With accusations of negligence and disregard for safety, a Port Lavaca, Texas company has been sued for injuries sustained by one of its workers.  Seaman Oscar Reyes, Jr. claims he injured his back while on the job on April 7, 2008.  Reyes was performing his regular duties when he tripped on a cable and fell onto the deck of the barge.  The injured worker claims his area lacked sufficient lighting and the tripping cable was not supposed to have been left out on deck.

Reyes had also been injured two weeks previously while on the job.  He tried to work through his injuries but was unable to complete his tasks and instead sought medical treatment.  He was eventually terminated from his position.  Plaintiff seeks lost wages, pain and mental anguish, and reimbursement for permanent earning capacity damage.
