Rhinelander man gets 12 years in jail

Posted on Thursday, May 27th, 2010 at 2:39 am

Pleading guilty, a Rhinelander father will be spending 12 years in jail for child abuse and neglect.

In May 2009, the 23 year-old man's daughter, a girl of 10 months, was found dead. It was uncovered that she had died from morphine overdose, which was due to the father's negligence. He had left a pill near enough for her to grab and ingest. According to the prosecution, he was under the influence of drugs at the time, and did not see it necessary to take her to the hospital.

Her mother, a 22 year-old, was acquitted earlier this year in a January trial.

The 12 years of jail come from felony counts of child abuse recklessly causing great harm and neglecting a child causing death, which amount to concurrent sentences of 12 and 5 years. Also, a period of 5 years will be spent following the jail stay as extended supervision under the District Attorney's Office.

The judge reprehended the father during the sentencing, citing a lack of remorse and an overall selfish attitude during the proceedings.

After the sentence was announced, the father's defense attorney hinted at a probable appeal to the trial's result.

After an altercation with police officers in Mole Lake, a 19 year-old man was arrested Saturday. The Forest County Sheriff's Department noted that the deputy involved had been injured, although the announcement also made clear that those injuries were minor. The man was arrested on a felony warrant from Oneida County, and is expected to have additional felony charges pressed after this incident.

The altercation happened after officers arrived at the man's Mole Lake home Saturday morning, The man fled on a four wheeler, causing injury to the deputy in the pursuit. Officers caught the man trying to re-enter his home just before 6 in the evening, and moved in to arrest him. He resisted, causing the officer involved in his apprehension to lose both his pepper spray and baton. The man attempted to take the officer's gun, at which point the officer fired a shot, injuring neither. The man fled the scene again, but turned himself in shortly before 8:30 that night after authorities had cornered him at his mother's house.

The department said that this man had a criminal history that included convictions on charges of drug possession, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct in both Forest and Lincoln Counties.

Jury deliberates medical malpractice suit

Posted on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 at 5:09 am

A jury in Milwaukee County, Wis., deliberated a medical malpractice claim in late April brought by the family of a lawyer who died of a heart attack in 2006. His family claims that the doctor misdiagnosed the man a few weeks before he died and thus did not notice his blocked arteries. They contend that if he had been properly diagnosed, he could have undergone procedures to fix the problem and extend his life.

The family physician who treated him argued that the man failed to come into the office for a follow-up appointment two weeks after the original diagnosis. The physician said he provided the care standard for a family physician.
