Study shows Wisconsin hospital-acquired infections affect nearly twenty a week

According to a recent study, the number of hospital-acquired infections in Wisconsin are very high. Research shows that nearly twenty patients a week receive a bloodstream infection from the central lines that are used to deliver fluids.

Out of the twenty that are affected weekly, two to four of them will die as a result. Officials involved in the study have said that this number could even be higher because the state of Wisconsin does not require hospitals to report the number of deaths that occur from bloodstream infections.

This is the first time that infections involving the central lines are available in Wisconsin. The central lines are tubes that are placed in the patient's neck, chest or arm. Seven other conditions were studied also because they occurr commonly and are preventable.
