Rhinelander Fire Chief gives winter weather driving tips

Posted on Wednesday, January 25th, 2012 at 7:44 pm

With ice and snow there are inevitably more car accidents on roads in Wisconsin in the winter.  Fortunately, Rhinelander Fire Department Deputy Chief Dale Wege has some advice on avoiding accidents and staying safe in cold weather.

According to Wege, approximately 9 out of 10 car accidents in the city that occur in the winter are caused by speeding, or even simply driving faster than road and weather conditions allow (even if this is not over the speed limit).

The Fire Chief also says that using cruise control when the roads are frozen or snowy is not a good idea. “The car will accelerate, the wheels will spin, then they’ll catch and the motor will be at a high rev.  It’s not safe.  Any kind of slippery road–no cruise control,” states Wege.

Rhinelander Goodwill asks for more donations

Posted on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 at 7:12 pm

The Rhinelander Goodwill store and other North-Central Wisconsin stores are asking for donations.  According to the store’s managers, Goodwills have seen an increase in demand over recent months.

The Rhinelander store says that they were lucky to have noticed an increase in donations since moving to their new location close to Wal-Mart.  However, the store manager says that sales are currently higher than donations.

The store is specifically seeking donations of clothes and footwear.  Children’s clothing, women’s jeans, and shoes are needed the most.

The Rhinelander personal injury lawyers of Habush Habush & Rottier S.C. want to encourage people in the area to give back to the community in whatever way they can.  To read more about donating to Goodwill, see WJFW.

Honda recalls 273,000 vehicles for airbag defect

Posted on Tuesday, January 10th, 2012 at 4:24 pm

Last month, Honda announced the recall of another 273,000 vehicles due to “defective airbag deployment systems.”  The recall was an addition to a previous recall of 600,000 Honda vehicles with airbag defects.

The added vehicles include Honda Civics, CRVs, Accords, Pilots, Odysseys, and Acuras.  The vehicle manufacturer requested that used car dealers stop selling the recalled vehicles until any airbag defects are repaired.  In addition, Honda has sent out notices to all owners of car involved in the recall.

Honda received complaints from owners that when the vehicles’ airbags deploy, broken metal flies out from the area around the airbag.  1 person was killed and 12 people were injured by the airbag defect.

Bus and semi crash on I-94

Posted on Friday, January 6th, 2012 at 5:20 pm

A Mega Bus and a semi-truck collided in Baldwin this Wednesday on Interstate 94. At least six passengers in the Mega Bus were injured, according to reports.

State Patrol blame a van that allegedly made an illegal U-turn. The drivers of the Mega Bus and semi-truck swerved to avoid the van and ended up colliding with one another. The truck hit the median and the driver had to be extricated, but he says he was not hurt.

Many passengers on the Mega Bus complained of neck pain, but none of the injuries are life-threatening. The Wisconsin State Patrol are currently investigating the crash.
