Police officials crackdown on drunk drivers during Labor Day weekend

Police officials across the state of Wisconsin are cracking down on drunken drivers in order to reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes in the state. The campaign runs from August 24 through September 6, Labor Day.

The  “Drunk Driving — Over the Limit. Under Arrest” campaign will consist of extra police officials out and for extended period of times in order to catch impaired drivers who are on the roadways.

Last year during the campaign, the town of Beloit made 15 OWI arrests and issued 233 traffic citations. Throughout all of 2009, 346 OWI arrests were made. According to the Police Sgt. in Beloit, Wisconsin has the highest number of drunken driving in the nation.

Man killed in two-vehicle accident

A Wisconsin man was killed after a two-vehicle accident on Highway 81 in Rocky County.

Authorities say that a 32-year-old man was driving on the roadway when he crossed the center line into oncoming traffic for unknown reasons.

He then collided with a semi-truck driven by a 44-year-old man. The 32-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency crews and the 44-year-old man was transported to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

Teen killed in accident involving police officer

Authorities are continuing to investigate a car accident that took the life of a 16-year-old boy and involved an on-duty police officer.

The accident occurred in late July around 1 a.m. as the police officer responded to a an accident. She was driving with her emergency lights and sirens on to get to a bar fight that was called in when she collided with the teen on Highway 35 and County OT.

The teen was thrown from the car in the accident and rushed to the hospital as soon as emergency crews arrived. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Wisconsin car accident kills one

A woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 33. The woman was driving a Ford Ranger going westbound when she turned suddenly and struck another vehicle.

The impact between the two vehicles caused the Ranger to hit an embankment and become aiborne. After landing, the Ranger then rolled before finally coming to a stop in a ditch. The woman was ejected from the car. The woman was later pronounced dead from injuries sustained. The accident is currently being investigating by Dodge County officials.

Car accidents can happen suddenly and can have traumatizing effects on all involved. Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victims.
