Laxative revenge leads to criminal charges

by Administrator 4. June 2010 05:20

Criminal charges have been filed against a 37-year-old student of the University of Wisconsin Marathon County following a bad revenge prank. Up to a $10,000 fine and 42-month prison term can come with a conviction of placing a foreign object in food.

According to the police investigation, the student placed some cookies for her Bacteriology 101 professor to find before the class's final exam, which took place on December 18, 2009. The professor, seeing what appeared to be a gift, ate one of the cookies following the test. Instead of a gesture of good will, the cookies contained half of a box of laxatives. She fell ill the next day, which was supposed to be part of a trip to southern California.

The professor admitted that she was unpopular with students, as they thought her class involved too much difficult work and testing, but that this sort of thing was unexpected. She noted that she was only still in Wausau at the time because of a contract she had signed with the university. Since the incident, she has moved to California.

The student confessed to the crime, also saying that she had been the only one involved in the plot. She said that she regretted her decision almost immediately after making it.

Preliminary hearings for student's upcoming trial will commence July 6.

Rhinelander man gets 12 years in jail

by Administrator 27. May 2010 02:39

Pleading guilty, a Rhinelander father will be spending 12 years in jail for child abuse and neglect.

In May 2009, the 23 year-old man's daughter, a girl of 10 months, was found dead. It was uncovered that she had died from morphine overdose, which was due to the father's negligence. He had left a pill near enough for her to grab and ingest. According to the prosecution, he was under the influence of drugs at the time, and did not see it necessary to take her to the hospital.

Her mother, a 22 year-old, was acquitted earlier this year in a January trial.

The 12 years of jail come from felony counts of child abuse recklessly causing great harm and neglecting a child causing death, which amount to concurrent sentences of 12 and 5 years. Also, a period of 5 years will be spent following the jail stay as extended supervision under the District Attorney's Office.

The judge reprehended the father during the sentencing, citing a lack of remorse and an overall selfish attitude during the proceedings.

After the sentence was announced, the father's defense attorney hinted at a probable appeal to the trial's result.

by Administrator 28. April 2010 06:04

Emergency responders blame carbon monoxide for causing the death of a couple in Rock County, Wis., authorities said. Some family members found the 68-year-old man and the 66-year-old woman unconscious Saturday afternoon in their condiminium, police said. When emergency responders arrived on the scene, they discovered a high concentration of carbon monoxide in the condo.
