Hazel Paulson, a 95-year-old woman, was killed in a car accident Saturday morning. Hers is the first car accident fatality the city of Shawano has seen in nearly a decade.
Paulson was riding as a passenger when the driver of the vehicle failed to yield right-of-way to an oncoming car. The Shawano Police determined the woman driving Paulson, Carole Scharr, to be at fault for the accident but maintain that she had not been drinking.
Paulson was flown to the Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, where she was eventually pronounced dead due to the injuries she sustained in the accident. Scharr and the other vehicle’s driver suffered only minor injuries.
There are many reasons a person may become distracted while driving and cause an accident, but it’s imperative that drivers make an effort to pay attention to their surroundings to prevent accidents such as this one from occurring.
